Texas Governor Proclaims May 10, 2023, as World FM Day

May 01, 2023

Signed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a proclamation officially recognizing May 10, 2023, as World Facility Management (FM) Day was presented to IFMA Global Headquarters in Houston, Texas, USA.

IFMA contacted the governor’s office in March to request a proclamation formally recognizing FM’s responsibility for the functionality, safety and sustainability of the built environment, and publicly supporting observance of the day designed to celebrate and raise awareness of the FM community’s contributions around the world. Gov. Abbott’s declaration states:

“Recognizing that facility management makes the world a better place, professional organizations such as the International Facility Management Association set standards of excellence, provide opportunities for continued education, and celebrate the many contributions that facility management professionals make to our society. Each year, a day is set aside in order to shed light on our facility management professionals. Today and hereafter, I encourage all Texans to learn more about this critical profession and to express appreciation for those who devote themselves to it. Our facility management professionals ensure safety and security in the present while paving the way for an even brighter future, and they therefore represent the best of the Lone Star State.”

The proclamation also acknowledges the essential duties performed by FMs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including ensuring that people returned to the safest buildings possible:

“During a once-in-a-century public health crisis, these dedicated individuals facilitated the gradual reopening of business and public spaces, and by doing so, they paved the way for a collective return to normalcy. So rarely does a particular profession impact the fullness of public life, but facility management is essential to any business, government entity, or organization that operates within the built environment.”
